Background:
Somewhere in the dimension known as Hueco Mundo. Hollows consuming other hollows gradually coalesced into a Menos Grande. In this mass conglomeration of souls devouring other souls, one consciousness arose to retain control of the Gillian. It took on the name Ulquiorra Schiffer.
Over the centuries, Ulquiorra grew in power, evolving from a Gillian to an Adjucas, then from an Adjucas to a Vasto Lorde, the highest rank of hollow. At this time, Sousuke Aizen approached the hollow, offering it great power and a fearless leader. Ulquiorra accepted, and Aizen used the Orb of Distortion to artificially turn Ulquiorra into an Arrancar, a hollow with the powers of a Shinigami. Due to his immense power, Ulquiorra was granted a position in Aizen's elite ranks as Espada #4.
Some time later, Aizen ordered an expedition to the human world, in order to kill a certain human - Kurosaki Ichigo. The mission was carried out by two individuals - Yammy, Espada #10; and Ulquiorra. When they arrived at their destination, there were a number of humans around, who Ulquiorra gave permission to kill. A small number of humans survived, but none of them were of any interest to Ulquiorra, save one: a woman named Inoue Orihime, with an uncanny ability to heal injuries and reject realities. However, before any further action could be taken, Ichigo arrived at the scene, and fought Yammy.
Ulquiorra spend Yammy's battle observing the target, Ichigo. Halfway through the battle, though, something strange happened, and Ichigo stopped fighting altogether. The Espada were eventually driven into leaving by the appearance of Urahara and Yoruichi, but Ulquiorra was satisfied - he had ascertained that Ichigo was trash, not worth killing, and that his power would destroy itself before he could become a threat to their plans.
Shortly afterwards, a second mission was sent to the real world, to attack Karakura town, with the supposed goal of capturing Inoue Orihime. However, while Orihime was being transported away to Soul Society, Ulquiorra interrupted her in mid-transit, and used her friends as hostages in order to force her to surrender. Orihime was brought back to Hueco Mundo, where Aizen placed her under Ulquiorra's care.
After this, it wasn't much longer until Ichigo and his allies invaded Hueco Mundo. Ulquiorra stayed back, observing their battles through the eyes of the other Espada. After Kuchiki Rukia killed Aaroniero, Espada #9, he observed her apparent subsequent death, and accordingly went to intercept Ichigo.
Ulquiorra told Ichigo that Rukia was dead, but Ichigo turned to save her, not believing Ulquiorra's words. When Ulquiorra told him that he was the one who forced Orihime to come to Hueco Mundo, Ichigo immediately turned back and fought Ulquiorra with all his might. Despite using an unknown power involving a hollow mask, Ichigo lost, and Ulquiorra left, telling him to flee if he was still able.
Not long after this, Ulquiorra went to see Orihime, only to find that she was missing. He learned that Grimmjaw, Espada #6, had taken her to heal Ichigo so that they could fight on even terms. Ulquiorra found him and ordered him to stop. Grimmjaw, intent on fighting Ichigo, used a Caja Negacion to temporarily trap Ulquiorra in a pocket dimension.
Personality:
Ulquiorra is a cold and callous individual. He regards most people weaker than himself as trash. He frequently displays very little interest in events around him, as if nothing could possibly be important enough to provoke his attention.
In addition to his callous personality, Ulquiorra also bears a very analytical mind. When faced with something unknown, his first reaction is to analyze and identify it, forming theories as to its function on the spot. He frequently is more interested in a phenomenon or individual than he lets on; for instance, when he defeats Ichigo, he expresses disappointment in the fact that Ichigo's growth didn't meet his expectations.
Despite his apathetic attitude toward battle, Ulquiorra has shown signs of enjoying it. According to Grimmjaw, whenever he takes particular interest in a battle, he has a tendency to stab them in the same spot as the hole in his own chest. This habit, in addition to his other various disguised interests, are largely unconscious; Ulquiorra still considers himself to be cold and uncaring, even in these matters.
